LGBTQ+
Did you know..
More than 1 in 5 children who are adopted in the UK are adopted into LGBTGQ+ families!
We therefore have a large, and growing local LGBTQ+ community of adopters and we would love to talk to you about joining us.
Who can adopt?
Whether you are thinking of adopting as a solo/ single adopter, or as part of a LGBTQ+ couple, we would very much welcome an enquiry from you. We assess each application on the basis of the stability and capacity to provide a stable, loving home for a child or children through to their adulthood and beyond.
The process
We ask all people considering adoption to come along to one of our online ‘Introduction to Adoption’ information sessions. The dates and times for these are shown on the page and need to be booked so we can send you the link.
We know that coming forward to gain information about adopting can feel like a big step, but we will take it one step at a time. If you feel in anyway uneasy about joining on online event, you can keep your camera off and just listen to the presentation, or we can also send you a prerecorded event. The advantage of the live event is that the recruitment team are also joined by a social worker from one of our assessment teams and also a local adopter- very often from the LGBTQ+ community.
At the event, we talk through the process, including the assessment, why children may need adoption and how we match children and adoptive families and crucially provide lifelong support and training for all our adopters. If you did want to also chat anything through please do call the recruitment manager directly on 01743 254185 (leave a message with your name and number if you get the answerphone as we can be on other calls/ in meetings or away from the desk).
Other Information and Support Available
As a partnership we are members or New Family Social who are the national organisation supporting LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers. Our recruitment manager is also a local champion for them. This means that you can join their services for free! At the time of writing we are working closely with New Family Social to set up a local LGBTQ+ support and social network so ask us about that if you are interested. Once in the assessment process we can also ‘buddy you up’ with adopters in similar situations/ with similar experiences if you feel you would find that helpful.
We also host numerous local groups and activities; coffee and cake mornings, walk and talks and lots of other welcoming groups alongside a robust training programme that is available to all adopters for life!
